چکیده

A random vector X with given univariate marginals can be obtained by first applying the normal distribution function to each coordinate of a vector Z of correlated standard normals to produce a vector U of correlated uniforms over (0, 1) and then transforming each coordinate of U by the relevant inverse marginal. One approach to fitting requires, separately for each pair of coordinates of X, the rank correlation, r(ρ), or the product-moment correlation, rL(ρ), where ρ is the correlation of the corresponding coordinates of Z, to equal some target r∗. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution for any feasible target, without imposing restrictions on the marginals. For the case where r(ρ) cannot be computed exactly due to an infinite discrete support, the relevant infinite sums are approximated by truncation, and lower and upper bounds on the truncation errors are developed. With a function r̃(ρ) defined by the truncated sums, a bound on the error r(ρ∗) − r∗ is given, where ρ∗ is a solution to r̃(ρ∗) = r∗. Based on this bound, an algorithm is proposed that determines truncation points so that the solution has any specified accuracy. The new truncation method has potential for significant work reduction relative to truncating heuristically, largely because as required accuracy decreases, so does the number of terms in the truncated sums. This is quantified with examples. The gain appears to increase with the heaviness of tails.

Efficient Correlation Matching for Fitting Discrete Multivariate Distributions with Arbitrary Marginals and Normal-Copula Dependence

A approach for modeling dependence in a finite-dimensional random vector X with given univariate marginals is via a normal copula that fits the rank or linear correlations for the bivariate marginals of X. In this approach, known as the NORTA method, the normal distribution function is applied to each coordinate of a vector Z of correlated standard normals to produce a vector U of correlated un...

Information bounds for Gaussian copulas.

Often of primary interest in the analysis of multivariate data are the copula parameters describing the dependence among the variables, rather than the univariate marginal distributions. Since the ranks of a multivariate dataset are invariant to changes in the univariate marginal distributions, rank-based estimators are natural candidates for semiparametric copula estimation. Asymptotic informa...

Gaussian Process Vine Copulas for Multivariate Dependence

Copulas allow to learn marginal distributions separately from the multivariate dependence structure (copula) that links them together into a density function. Vine factorizations ease the learning of high-dimensional copulas by constructing a hierarchy of conditional bivariate copulas. However, to simplify inference, it is common to assume that each of these conditional bivariate copulas is ind...

Copula Based Independent Component Analysis

We propose a parametric version of Independent Component Analysis (ICA) via Copulas families of multivariate distributions that join univariate margins to multivariate distributions. Our procedure exploits the role for copula models in information theory and in measures of association, specifically: the use of copulae densities as parametric mutual information, and as measures of association on...

Extending the rank likelihood for semiparametric copula estimation

Quantitative studies in many fields involve the analysis of multivariate data of diverse types, including measurements that we may consider binary, ordinal and continuous. One approach to the analysis of such mixed data is to use a copula model, in which the associations among the variables are parameterized separately from their univariate marginal distributions. The purpose of this article is...
